Paddy Collins, a LABASAD student, has won an award at the Cannes Young Lions
Paddy Collins, a student of LABASAD's Online Master in Motion Graphics, carried out this project with Amber Redmond who is also a designer at Slater, based in Dublin. Together they developed this identity project for the brand ‘O Cinema de Billy Wilder’.
The project involved creating a branding identity for “O Cinema de Billy Wilder,” a film exhibition showcased in São Paulo, Brazil. The core concept for the branding revolves around Billy Wilder’s iconic glasses, which serve as a symbolic lens through which audiences can view and appreciate his cinematic work. The glasses represent the director’s unique vision and influence in film history. The colour palette and typography are inspired by the vibrant film posters from Wilder’s era.
“We wanted to create a visual identity that would resonate with both Wilder’s legacy and the exhibition’s audience”

Paddy and Amber entered the Cannes Young Lions competition thanks to motivation and encouragement from their creative director Emma. They thought they’d give it a go, without expecting anything in return and went on to compete in Cannes, winning a silver medal.
“Winning was a huge surprise and an incredible honour. Taking part in the Cannes Young Lions Awards gave us an amazing opportunity to showcase our work on an international level and represent Ireland – You don’t often get the opportunity to compete globally, so we savoured every moment of it! The entire experience has been incredibly rewarding, not only for our portfolios but also for our personal and professional growth.”

We took the opportunity to talk to Paddy to tell us about his experience in the Online Master in Motion Graphics. We asked him how the Master is contributing to his professional career and he answers, “I chose the Master’s to hone my skills in motion design, which is an area I want to specialise in. The course has been brilliant in boosting my confidence and giving me the technical skills I need to pursue a full-time career in this field. It has helped me to broaden my creative tools and strengthen my 2D and 3D knowledge.
“One of the highlights of my experience at LABASAD has been learning from industry professionals who bring real-world experience into the classroom. The lectures have been super inspiring—they offer a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process and career journeys of successful motion designers. Being surrounded by such talented classmates is also a huge motivator. Seeing everyone else’s work pushes me to elevate my own skills and creativity”
