Mauricio Delgado, a student at LABASAD, recognised by the Motion Design Awards

We speak with Mauricio Delgado, a student of the Online Master's in Motion Graphics, about his Final Master's Project, which was selected and highlighted by the Motion Design Awards.

Mauricio is from Costa Rica and has been a student at LABASAD in the Online Master’s in Motion Graphics, led by Gabriel Morala. We speak with him to hear about his final project, his experience in the Online Master’s in Motion Graphics, and how his project came to be recognised as Video of the Day by the Motion Design Awards.

What is your Final Master’s Project about? What is the key concept?

The project is an audiovisual piece showcasing the most popular traditional games in Costa Rican culture, which have been passed down from generation to generation. Many of these games share characteristics with others worldwide, known by different names; however, I wanted to preserve the names they are known by in my country.

Under the guidance of Professor João Lucas, I was able to achieve a harmonious balance between 2D and 3D techniques that allowed for an efficient workflow, with music serving as the foundation that sets the rhythm for the animation.

My intention was to standardise each game within a clear and consistent aesthetic that would convey my vision and artistic style as a professional in Graphic Design and Motion Graphics.

Where do these games come from? Are they from your childhood? Does this project have a personal purpose?

I believe traditional toys and games hold a special place in my heart, as from a young age they encouraged physical and social activity both at school and at home. It’s lovely to see adults explaining the rules and mechanics of the games to children, laughing together and reminiscing about times gone by.

I think it’s important to highlight the benefits of traditional toys for physical and cognitive development in both children and adults, especially in a world where screens and digital interactions have taken over the toy industry. Personally, I hope these games endure for many generations, thanks to their simplicity and low cost.

Since creating my personal animation brand three years ago, I’ve been interested in exploring these kinds of elements from my childhood, which are fascinating mechanically and serve as inspiration for creating animation.

What does it mean to you to be selected and recognised by the Motion Design Awards? What motivates you to participate?

“Since I started my Master’s Final Project, I wanted to create a piece with the widest possible reach, one that could serve as my personal calling card. This is why I decided to showcase it on a prominent platform for Motion Graphics projects, the Motion Design Awards site.”

It was a delightful surprise to be informed that my project was chosen as Video of the Day on August 22, 2024, after being evaluated by both the public and the jury based on the criteria of concept, design, movement, and sound. This recognition motivates me to continue creating animated pieces that will allow me to carve out a space for myself in such a demanding field as Motion Design.

Tell us about yourself: Where are you from, what do you do, and why did you decide to study Motion Graphics?

I am Costa Rican and studied for a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts with an emphasis in Graphic Design at the University of Costa Rica. I have been professionally dedicated to branding, content creation for social media, and video post-production, with digital animation being my greatest professional passion.

I have worked for various brands, including Seattle Sounders, Best Buy, Pizza Hut, and New Balance. Currently, I am a Senior Motion Designer at the multinational consulting firm Accenture, in their office located in Heredia, Costa Rica.

Since my first job in 2015 at an advertising agency, I felt an almost instinctive need to bring my logos, vectors, and text into a moving world, as if they were puppets in a play, aiming to enhance and enrich the message.

Having taught myself how to use After Effects and Cinema 4D, I wanted to formalise my passion through a curriculum that encompassed various techniques and experiences from specialists in the field, which would also serve as an excuse to create a more robust portfolio with personal projects.

What would you highlight about your learning and experience in the Online Master’s in Motion Graphics?

“I believe the Online Master’s in Motion Graphics effectively condenses a wealth of valuable content into a short time frame, making it very accessible for those of us who already have full-time jobs and want to complement our careers. The Master’s programme is taught by true experts in the field.”

“I highly recommend this Online Master’s programme to any professional in the fields of design and communication who is ready to take the leap towards greater mastery of the tools and wants to strengthen their personal brand.”

Finally, what are your plans for the future with your projects?

I would like to continue defining my artistic style; I am eager to explore new themes and techniques that will help consolidate a personal aesthetic and, who knows, attract the attention of potential clients while I do what I enjoy most: bringing graphics to life.
